If you’ve cut the cord like I have, it can be somewhat difficult getting your Vegas fix on the small screen. Have no fear my compadres, as I have scoured the Netflix library for shows and particular episodes that feature our favorite city, even if it’s just for a few moments. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but just a sampling of a few shows I’ve come across. I know I said I “scoured” earlier. Maybe it was more passive than that. The Netflix library changes frequently, so this list will certainly change. Let me know if you find any others:
The League: Season 2 Episode 1
The League is most definitely targeting a niche market: fantasy football fans. It’s guy humor, but guy humor done really well. In the season 2 premier, the guys take their fantasy draft to Las Vegas. Their actual draft takes place in an MGM cabana, so you can see the interior of one similar to what Tony and I reviewed in the MGM Cabana Review episode. There are a few interior casino shots and a guest appearance by the then relevant Chad Ochocinco.
The Player: Secrets of a Las Vegas Whale
In this Bloomberg TV mini documentary, notorious high roller Don Johnson (why is he not wearing a sport coat with rolled up sleeves?) explains how he works around the system to win millions from casinos in both Atlantic City and Las Vegas. While Don and I are at different ends of the gambling spectrum, I was fairly entertained by what is essentially a long interview with the whale himself. Plus, there’s a Steve Wynn sighting as well. Man, he’s tan. If you don’t have Netflix, you can watch it in its entirety on the Bloomberg TV site.
Mysteries at the Museum: Season 1 Episode 15
In Mysteries at the Museam, host Don Wildman discusses “mysterious” relics found at museums across the world. They are “mysterious” because we, the viewers, don’t know about them. I assure you, museum curators and historians know the story of these treasures. It should really just be called “Stuff at the Museum”, but I guess that’s not as catchy or elusive. Either way, in episode 15 of the first season, Don reveals the story of a $5 MGM Grand poker chip which has been seared by the fire that took place on the property in 1980. It was actually a fairly devastating fire, killing 85 people on the site that is now Bally’s. Clark County Museum director, Mark Hall-Patton, which you may have seen on Pawn Stars, helps Don fill in the story.
